"I have exciting news," Mrs. Oates told the class, "we have a new student." Whitney found herself turning around along with all of her classmates to look at the new girl sitting directly behind her.
"Why don't you stand up and introduce yourself," Mrs. Oates said.
The girl blushed and Whitney could tell that she didn't like having all of the attention on her. "My name is Fiona," she said so quietly the others could barely hear her, then she quickly sat back down. Whitney had never heard the name 'Fiona' before, but she liked it.

Whitney realized that she had not finished it yet, and immediately turned her attention to her spelling book.
A short while later the lunch bell rang. As Whitney walked down the hall to the cafeteria, she remembered that she needed to buy a milk to go with her sack lunch. She hoped there would still be chocolate milk left. If she got in line early enough, she was ususally able to get one of the last cartons remaining in the tray. Today she was very lucky, she got the last one! [img[http://www.mycrumbyworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/chocolate-milk.png]][[Feeling so happy->passage3]]
about her good fortune, she looked over to her usual spot where she ate her lunch with her friends everyday. It was open and being reserved just for her. She began humming a tune as she made her way toward her table, and that's when she noticed Fiona, sitting alone at another table. Her friends waved to her, thinking that maybe she hadn't seen that they had saved her a spot. Whitney stopped for a moment to think about something Rachel was always saying to her about "including people whenever you can." She remembered what it felt like to be the new girl when she joined a nature club that her mom had suggested. She really liked the girls in the club now, but she could still recall feeling the stares of the others who didn't know her, and wishing that she were anywhere but there. She shuddered at the memory, then turned and walked [img[http://www.mycrumbyworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/upside-down-arrow-hi-e1502304937291.png]]

"I meant to ask you where you got your name, I have never heard it before and I really like it," Whitney said as she sat down.
"Really?" Fiona asked. "My mom said that I was named after one of her friends who did a lot of amazing things. She said she always called her 'Fearless Fiona.' I don't know if it fits me though, I feel kind of afraid sometimes...especially today."
"Being the new kid can be scary," Whitney reassured her. "But once you make even one friend, it gets easier." She smiled at Fiona and Fiona smiled back as they began eating their lunches. [[Before long...->passage 7]]She was so happy that she was NOT the new girl, and that she had friends who always made a place for her. When she sat down, she looked over at Fiona quickly and noticed that Fiona looked sad and very lonely. She felt her stomach flip as she realized that she knew what Fiona was feeling, and she probably should have sat with her.
Once they began to eat their lunch, she heard someone from the next table ask "Hey, did you get the last chocolate milk from the tray?"
Whitney grinned and said,"Yes, I did! And it is going to taste SO good!"
She had been looking forward to having chocolate milk all morning but as she took the first drink, she didn't think it was as good as she remembered. She didn't know if it was the milk that tasted bad, or the feeling in her stomach that hadn't stopped since she looked at Fiona.

she decided that she wasn't in the mood for chocolate milk after all. In fact, she didnt feel like eating much at all. She knew that if she didn't eat now, she probably would not feel like playing kickball at recess, and she was starting to love kickball. [[Okay class...->passage 8]][img[http://www.mycrumbyworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/whitney-emb-e1502311073875.png]] Whitney's friends left their usual table and joined them. As they were finishing their food Whitney heard someone ask, "Hey, didn't you get the last chocolate milk today?"
Whitney grinned. "Yes, I did, but I have decided to give it to Fiona as a welcome gift." Even though Whitney was so excited about drinking this chocolate milk herself, for some reason she knew it would be better if she gave it to Fiona. Fiona looked at her with a grin that stretched from ear to ear. "Thank you Whitney. I love chocolate milk. I didn't even know they had it in the lunch line."
"Well, you do now! Whitney said. She could not believe how good it had made her feel to give it away. She would remember this feeling for a long time.
As the girls got to know each other, Fiona couldn't help but think about how she would remember this day, and Whitney's kindness for a long time too. "Time to start cleaning up!" Mrs. Oates was already preparing to line up the students and Whitney had only taken a bite or two of her lunch.
As they made the walk back to teh classroom, Whitney glanced over at Fiona noticing that she was wearing shoes that were almost exactly like the ones Whitney was wearing. She wondered what other things about Fiona might be similar to her...she may never find out now.
